Tips to save during the summer

With the busy summer season upon us, we’ve gathered some tips on how to save on some of the biggest budget busters of the season.

  1. Save on cooling costs
    1. Use a programmable or smart thermostat to keep the temperature slightly warmer when you are out of the house.
    2. Close blinds or curtains during the day when it’s hot and open windows when it’s cool.
    3. Use fans to circulate air and make the environment more comfortable.
    4. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, and electrical outlets with caulk or weatherstripping to create better insulation.
    5. Try to avoid using the oven to cook, when possible, as it can heat up your home. Instead use your microwave, toaster oven, or grill.
  2. Save on entertainment and activities
    1. Check out free outdoor movies and concerts. Some theaters also offer discount movies for kids at certain times or days of the week.
    2. Instead of a water park, drop by a local splash pad or visit the river or lake to stay cool.
    3. Borrow books, movies, and other types of media from the library instead of purchasing. You can also opt to use free streaming services.
    4. Visit local galleries and museums on free or discounted admission days.
  3. Save on gatherings and parties
    1. If you host, opt for a potluck, as opposed to making all of the food. If you choose to provide the food, skip frozen premade options as they often cost more per serving for the convenience.
    2. Start with thrift and dollar stores for decorations and party supplies.
    3. Check with friends, family, and neighbors to see what can be borrowed before renting anything (ie: tables, chairs, etc.).
    4. Use free digital invitations instead of printed ones.
    5. Look for coupons and discount codes! These are frequently available, especially around holidays like the 4th of July.

We hope these ideas help you save some funds this summer while still allowing you to enjoy all the fun the season has to offer!
